Alastair Greig

Dr Alastair Greig is a Reader in Sociology at The Australian National University. His association with the Murramarang area sprang from his parents’ decision to locate the family caravan at Pretty Beach. Since residential vans were removed from the site, early in the new millennium, Alastair has been a member of ANU Kioloa Advisory Board. His books include The Australian Way of Life (2013), Challenging Global Inequality (2007), Inequality in Australia (2003) and The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of (1995). He is the recipient of numerous national and ANU teaching awards, as well as, most recently, the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Campus Community.

Bruce Hamon’s They Came to Murramarang, first published in 1994, provides a unique combination of local history and personal recollections from a writer who witnessed the transformation of the Murramarang region from the timber era to modern times. This new edition retains the original character of Bruce’s engaging prose with additional chapters relating to Bruce’s life, the writing of the book, the Indigenous history of the region and the transformation of the area since the book was written. The book has also been enhanced by the insertion of additional photographs.
