    Terms and Conditions

All orders and purchases made through this website are subject to Terms and Conditions. These Terms and Conditions may change from time to time without prior notice, at the discretion of ANU Press.

  • Print-on-demand (PoD) books are produced using a digital print method that allows books to be ordered in very small quantities (as few as one copy at a time), which can then be delivered directly to customers in Australia and overseas. In addition, every title in our catalogue is always in-print. Print-on-demand book manufacturing has a smaller environmental footprint than traditional offset printing, which requires large orders in anticipation of sales, and unsold books are often destroyed, resulting in considerable waste. ANU Press books are printed and distributed by Ingram/Lightning Source, with printing facilities in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Our PoD books are usually produced as paperbacks (though some books are hardback), trimmed and perfect bound, with a matte laminate, full-colour cover and printed on a good-quality text paper.

  • Orders are delivered within Australia 21 days from the date of payment. International orders take 28 days from the date of payment to arrive. If you have not received your order within this timeframe, please email: orders.press@anu.edu.au or call (02) 6125 0291.

  • ANU Press was created to make available the intellectual output of the academic community, and publishes works covering a broad range of disciplines, including humanities, the arts, social sciences, business and economics, law and science.

  • ANU Press offers several advantages over traditional scholarly publishers:

    • All ANU Press titles combine quality peer review with fast production times. Once accepted, electronic publications reach their targeted audience without long lead times.
    • Because there is no charge for downloading our titles and the reach of titles is global, rates of access are very high. Download statistics are regularly provided, showing how many whole books and chapters have been downloaded per month.
    • ANU Press authors are participating in a global process of ‘public good’ by supporting the free dissemination of scholarly information.
    • ANU Press also provides an outlet for scholarly writing that may not have been considered for publication through traditional means because of small print runs or other limiting economic factors.
  • The ‘For authors’ page explains how to submit a manuscript to ANU Press for publication and describes the publishing process from submission to publication.

  • Once a proposal has been submitted to ANU Press, you will be contacted by a representative from the relevant disciplinary-based Editorial Boards, who will inform you as to whether or not they would like to see the full manuscript.

The manuscript will then undergo a rigorous peer-review process in which at least two referee reports will be obtained (at least one external to ANU) before the Editorial Board determines whether the work is to be published by ANU Press. ANU Press is also involved in the digitisation and republication of out-of-print works of high standard (including works previously published by ANU Press) and we welcome enquiries regarding republication.

  • The initial manuscript approval process is dependent upon the relevant Editorial Board, and ANU Press is unable to guarantee the time that this may take.

Once your manuscript is accepted for publication and the copyediting work has been completed, your book will be placed in the production cycle, which is quite swift. Most finalised manuscripts take around four months to progress through this production cycle (depending on the nature of the manuscript and the speed of authorial and editorial developments). For more information see the workflow chart in the Author Guide (PDF, 2.28 MB).

  • ANU Press occasionally publishes books that began as theses, and which showcase exceptional academic research. If you are interested in rewriting your thesis into a book, then you may wish to submit a proposal to the relevant Editorial Board before beginning the process so that they can raise any questions or concerns they may have. Authors wanting to rewrite their thesis into a book are advised to consult the following resources:

  • ANU Press is always open to discussing co-publication arrangements, and we have co-published a wide range of titles. ANU Press also encourages agreements that allow its works to be translated into other languages. If you wish to co-publish or publish a translation of an ANU Press title, please get in touch.

  • If you wish another publisher to publish your work, ANU Press will need to discuss a co-publication arrangement with this publisher. Please get in touch with ANU Press directly to discuss this before contacting another publisher.

  • All ANU Press publications are eligible for HERDC/DIISRTE points. ANU Press produces fully peer-reviewed works and is listed by the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) on their Register of Acceptable Commercial Publishers, enabling ANU Press authors to claim points under the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC) scheme. Information on publication output types and categories is available from Research Services.

  • As an open-access publisher, all our ebooks are available free of charge. ANU Press is funded by The Australian National University to operate and publish high-quality works that make a contribution to scholarship and research. ANU Press does not offer authors royalties; all funds received by ANU Press are invested into producing and disseminating its works to a global audience.
